Étendard - SEM

The Étendard (meaning "Standard") began as a proposal for a light fighter for both
the Armée de L'Air (Étendard II) and also as a light weight tactical strike fighter
for the NATO air forces (Étendard VI). Neither was selected so Dassault proposed
a maritime version. This was met with success and the Aéronavale ordered 85 IVM
and 21 photo-reconnaissance IVP versions. In the 1970's upgrades were in order so
the Super-Étendard was developed with new engine, radar, upgraded avionics, and increased
range and payload capabilities. The Super-Étendard has also been operated by
Argentina and Iraq. The type was further upgraded in the 1990s and designated
the Super-Étendard Modernisé (SEM).
