The Mirage III
|
The Mirage III was initially designed as a lightweight interceptor but found greater success as a multi-role
fighter. The first Mirage IIIC were delivered to the Armée de l'Air in July 1961. The multi-role
Mirage IIIE added a more powerful engine, a nav/attack system, and doppler navigation radar. The
reconnaissance version Mirage IIIR is based on the Mirage IIIE airframe but features cameras rather than a
radar in the nose. The basic armament is two 30-mm DEFA cannon in the fuselage and a wide variety of
external stores can be carried.
