The page features aircraft created by various Flight Simulator enthusiasts
from around the world.   The goal is to feature a new aircraft each week.

Cheetah D
DENEL Aviation Cheetah D, South African Air Force

During the United Nation's Arms Embargo against South Africa (1977 to 1994) it became necessary to develop a locally designed and manufactured aircraft to eventually replace the Mirage F1.  Atlas Aviation (now DENEL Aviation) proposed a program to rejuvenate the retired Mirage IIIs.

The two seater D model first appeared in the mid 1980s.  All Cheetah D's were converted from retired SAAF Mirage IIIDZ and D2Z trainers.  The type was operational by the summer of 1987 serving in the Cheetah conversion and fighter/ground attack role.  They continue in use today primarily as operational trainers with No. 2 Squadron, the "Flying Cheetahs", at Louis Trichardt AFB.

Since the Mirage III, Mirage F1, and Buccaneers have retired, the Cheetah is currently the SAAF's front-line, multi-role, fighter-bomber.  The Cheetah is expected to serve with the SAAF well into the new century.

This Flight Simulator aircraft was made specifically for FS2000 by Jason Ashworth of South Africa.  It includes moving control surfaces, gear, speed brakes, and a deployable drag chute (a quite effective one I might add).  The flight dynamics are the work of Jason and Henning van Rensburg.  The highly detailed 512 x 512 textures are the work of Neels Smit.  More images are available at the Mirage Aircraft for Flight Simulator website.

Information for these notes is from the IPMS South Africa website.
